A Trip to the Zoo - or a Walk in the Park

We ventured to the Detroit Zoo last weekend as it had been a while since we had been. Dan had been reminded that it had been 7 years since he was last there (I was pregnant with Jared at the time and his sister and her family were in town). After walking around for 4 hours and possibly seeing a total of 10 animals, he remembered why he waited so long to return.

We did catch a great shot of the crocidile looking for food - small animals or small children.

The renovated butterfly house was probably the best exhibit and William enjoyed trying to catch them as they fluttered by. He only succeeded in grabbing hold of a tree and ripping a leaf off.

There is a petition on this fall's ballot for extra funding for the zoo. I will vote for it - but seriously, let me see some animals at the zoo. The trees and flowers were beautiful - but I'll walk around the park for that!

Thats the downside to habitst like exhibits. Better for the animals not always so good for the people.

The best time is the fall, winter and spring to see most of the animals moving about. (Some have to be inside because it is too cold.) Animals have a tendency too to lay in hot weather and even in the shade or go inside.

We do appreciate the exhibits that attempt to replicate the animals' natural habitats but wish they would at take into account it is a zoo -- for the great ape exhibits maybe create some lookouts even from a distance so we could at least see them.

Also with the amphibians, they are never done very well -- too much in too small a space.
