a few from the zoo

A bug, likely the one that eats my cabbages.

A swarthy cicada

And one of the highlights of our trip:  The sparrows.

We arrived, and walked straight to the chimpanzees, one of whom was having a birthday, and purportedly whooping it up with a towel and some streamers. Only Jen has pictures of that, but they did make quite a mess.

After that, we rolled through the polar exhibit, of which, again, only Jennie has photos -- but the polar bear was unusually active, pacing, diving in the water and swimming.

After that, we decided to go right for the train, and head to the front of the zoo.

We had a short wait, so the boys needed to eat, and Will decided to share some of his crackers with the sparrows.

They were not displeased.

Disembarking from the train, to the right, there is a flower garden.  Will always likes to stop in to check out the flora, but also, the old train engine, on display, out of service.

At that point everyone decided they were hungry.  Again.  But Will had other ideas, eying the poorly placed playground.

Will met a little friend there, but the fun was abrupted when he smashed his face, getting a nasty knot right on his eyebrow.   Whoever the person was, watching him, they seemed unconcerned as he bawled, instead, making a call to inquire when he was getting food.

We hugged our children and moved on, admiring some hearty hibisci on the way

Just before we left, Will wanted to stop by the butterfly house at the front of the park.  There was dissent, as we had already walked to the back, ridden to the front, then walked to the back, again.

We all agreed it was a good idea, and it was well worth seeing the lovey birds and this unusual, green butterfly, what appears to be a philaethria dido, though, the guide at the zoo said otherwise.

If we're lucky, we can peer pressure Jen into posting pictures of the chimp party and the dashing polar..
