Each baby had a different rocking chair. When I was pregnant with Arianna, my neighbor was having a garage sale and was selling a wooden rocking chair. I had to have that chair for the nursery - after all, isn't there a whole section in the 'New Mom's Rule Book' that specifically states that a happy baby is a baby who is rocked to sleep? So, I summoned Dan to the neighbors house and pleasantly asked him to carry home my new purchase. He begrudgingly obliged.
It was the most uncomfortable chair!!! But I had a mission - I had to rock my little girl to sleep every night....so I placed a blanket over the chair and dealt with it.
Somewhere between the move from the old house to the new house....the chair was 'damaged' and met it's fate at the county dump (or did somebody retrieve it from our front lawn in the early hours before trash pick-up???) Who knows!
For Jared - it was the tan lazy-boy. We had 2 of them and so I did not have to steal Dan's favorite chair from him....oh - did I mention Jared was born at the beginning of football season? Dan had to have the comfy chair for that!
Those chairs moved on with the arrival of the brown suede sofa with built in lazy-boys. Dan hates it and reminds me of it every chance he can. I find it pleasantly comfortable and remind him of it every time I fall asleep on it. Of course, Dan reminds me I would fall asleep in the horribly uncomfortable wooden rocking chair.
And so with the arrival of William - I panicked! How was I going to rock my baby to sleep??? Rules are rules. Ah - thank goodness for grandparents with a basement of extra furniture. We happily acquired the very plush and very comfy blue lazy-boy. This is by far the most comfortable rocking chair I have ever had. It rocks, it reclines, you can put your feet up and I can fall asleep. Oh and so can William. I believe my Dad said it was also very comfortable for him to sleep in...I think he misses it.
But no matter what kind of rocking chair I had, the bedtime routine of giving my little ones their bottle and rocking them to sleep is by far one of the greatest moments I spend with them. It is a time that is too quickly passed by and one that I will always cherish.
Yes, on more than one (ok - several) occasions, Dan does have to wake me up as I too rock myself to sleep but that is just all part of my master plan to soak up a few more minutes with the world's cuddliest, snuggliest baby!!
And Dan - I'm on to you....I know you are eying that blue lazy boy for football season - but you'll have to get past Will and I for it!!!
